Eddie Nketiah scored the only goal after 37 minutes as Crystal Palace won 1–0 away to Fulham in the English League Cup. No further goal followed, even though Fulham finished with a substantial advantage in possession and overall attempts.

ESPN credits Fulham with 74.4 per cent of the ball, 14 attempts and four shots on target. Palace had four attempts in total, three on target. The large possession gap therefore translated into a difference of only one effort on target, a much smaller separation than the headline share of the ball might suggest.

Nketiah’s finish gave Palace the advantage they retained to the end. Fulham’s figures, meanwhile, illustrate the distinction between producing more attempts and finding an equaliser. Those observations follow directly from the result and statistical comparison; they do not require an unsupported description of Palace’s defensive shape or the difficulty of each chance.
